With dental braces, you won't have to live with less than perfect teeth and gums. When indicated, expanders work hand-in-hand with your braces to create an optimal result for your teeth. Situations where crowding, crossbites and narrowing of the upper jaw are present, braces alone might not fully correct these malocclusions (bad bites).
Expanders are temporarily attached to the upper teeth in the back of your mouth. A couple of times a day, a family member will use a special key to expand the device. Initially, the space between your front teeth may widen; ultimately, the space will close and over the course of the next several months, the expander will widen your upper jaw to correct your bite.
In certain cases, a lower expander might be used as well as an upper expander. The use of upper and lower expanders will decrease the likelihood of needing extractions.
